    Learning presence is proposed as an additional construct to the framework to account for the unique contributions students bring to their online learning.

    The relationships between the framework’s individual components, social presence, teaching presence, cognitive presence, and the proposed construct of learning presence, are uncovered.

    Students’ positions of influence and prestige in their online discourse were analyzed in relation to their expressions of the four forms of presence.

    A tentative reconceptualization of the CoI framework for future CoI-related research is provided.
