  1. The emergence of active learning classrooms (ALCs) on university campuses introduces a need for university teachers to have knowledge of the pedagogical use of physical space. We consider expanding two well-known frameworks for teacher knowledge. Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) describes teacher knowledge about teaching discipline-specific content. Technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) recognizes digital technology as part of the knowledge base. With increased attention on learning spaces, we propose redefining technology to include non-digital technologies, (e.g. furniture, whiteboards). Further, we add “environment” to the knowledge base to address rhetorical communications from both the physical space and the classroom climate.

  2. This study investigated the influence of physical and virtual learning spaces on students’ socialization into future professions while attending a modern university. Qualitative analysis of an undergraduate liberal arts program that employs the use of roundtable classrooms was conducted. Findings revealed that the roundtable classroom promotes socialization by facilitating the exchange of elaborate feedback and intellectual talk between students and instructors. However, some students reported feeling exposed or uncomfortable and thus less likely to participate. Virtual learning spaces influenced socialization, and their effectiveness was heavily moderated by the instructor and by the frequency and use of educational technology. Recommendations and suggestions for future research are provided.

  3. "While FTE staffing levels did increase by 20 percent from 2014, the 2018 ratio of AV-equipped spaces to full-time AV staff was 47:1."

We have 160+ classrooms. All have AV integrated (or brought in as needed). This would suggest we'd have 4 AV staff for the campus? We're well over that, and still stretched thin. How on earth can one staff member support 47 rooms?

It doesn't talk about roles - are these the AV nerds, the instructor-support, the consultants? etc.

  4. Although active learning classrooms are designed to support innovative teaching and learning practices, classroom success requires sustained and intentional faculty development.
The University of Iowa and Indiana University each launched active learning classroom initiatives centered on faculty development.
These programs not only benefit individual instructors and their students, they are changing the pedagogy and culture at both universities in powerful and enduring ways.
The two cases offer many crucial findings about the design of both active learning spaces and faculty development programs to support success in and beyond individual courses and disciplines.

  5. The UK HE Learning Space Toolkit has been produced by SCHOMS, AUDE and UCISA to help members from all three professional bodies share best practice and work more effectively when creating learning spaces. We would like to thank the numerous colleagues from across the professional associations, and others within the wider higher education community, who have contributed to the production of this Toolkit by sharing their experiences and reviewing content. We hope this Toolkit will serve both as a practical guide and as a source of inspiration in the design of spaces that delight and motivate students, as well as they meet their functional needs.

  7. open workspaces are about cramming more bodies into less space, increasing density - not about innovation or collaboration or the other buzzwords that are used to push the shift.
